Abstract

The Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale carried out in the presence of the parents and focused on the baby’s body is a very strong emotional experience shared between the parents, the baby, and the examiner. These consultations are a lively and truthful encounter between the parents and their baby; through a movement of regressive identification, they promote empathy with the baby and his/her archaic feelings, and revival of the primary symbolization process. They enable any signs that the baby is suffering to be identified early, thus facilitating a rapid preventive intervention. They can lead to the opening of a therapeutic space, in particular with parents whose traumatic past results in a reluctance to use any form of psychological approach.
