Abstract

Parenting a child in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is challenging, and transitioning from NICU to home can be daunting. The Newborn Behavioral Observations System (NBO) was designed to sensitize parents and other primary caregivers to their baby’s competencies, vulnerabilities, and individuality, to foster sensitive and responsive parent-infant interactions, and to contribute to the development of a positive parent-infant relationship from the very beginning. As such, the NBO may be a useful tool for various NICU professionals.
